About the Children’s Cafeteria (Kodomo Shokudo)
The “children’s cafeteria” is a free or low-cost cafeteria where a child can go alone. Some of them are called “community cafeterias” or “everyone’s cafeterias. These are voluntary, private-sector initiatives, and the number has grown to 3,718 by June 2019.
Children’s cafeterias are very diverse, ranging from once a month to serving three meals 365 days a year, and from targeting a few people to attracting hundreds of people each time.
The objectives vary from providing meals to hungry children, to eliminating isolated meals, to providing food education using nutritious foods, to creating a place for community interaction.
However, they all share a common goal of building a community where no one is left behind and where no one is likely to be left behind through “building a community with children at the center”.

The potential impact of the Kodomo Shokudo on social issues
It is said that one in seven children in Japan live in poverty.
By supporting the Kodomo Shokudo (Children’s Cafeteria), which provides free or low-cost meals in a comfortable environment, we can contribute to the support of children suffering from poverty.
In addition, the Children’s Cafeteria, as a base for multi-generational community communication, provides children with learning opportunities and a variety of experiences that broaden their horizons.
They can also learn basic life habits such as washing hands and brushing teeth.

Children’s cafeterias, where local children and adults eat together, can bring the experience of “eating with many people” to children and adults who are eating alone. This can help parents in distress and lead to a better and safer society and community in which to raise children.

About Musubie
Musubie is a non-profit organization that supports the activities of the Children’s Cafeteria.
Musubie’s vision is to create a society where “no one is left behind” by supporting children’s cafeterias.
Our goal is that there are children’s cafeterias everywhere in Japan, that they are a comfortable environment, and that people participating in social activities are able to build their own futures.
Research, support for children’s cafeterias and their networks, and partnerships with companies are the three major projects of Musubie.
